                                    the river Spey

Fishing in Grantown on Spey

The River Spey is undoubtedly one of the country's premier salmon rivers. The season starts in February and large numbers of sea trout arrive in late May and early June. The Spey is just a 5 minute stroll from Kinross House through the beautiful pine woods and we offer the use of our freezer to guests who wish to take their catch home. Permits and equipment can be hired locally either in advance or upon arrival.

This picture of a guests catch in 2004 is just 5 minutes walk from Kinross Guest House and at the edge of Grantown on Spey.

Map of Fishing Lochs around Grantown-on-Spey

The River Spey itself is the fastest flowing river in Europe, falling over 1100 feet at a drop of 11.5 feet per mile over its 98-mile journey to the sea.

The lochs and rivers of Badenoch and Strathspey offer some of the finest and most famous and challenging game fishing in Scotland.

The source of the River Spey lies high in the Monadhliath Mountains just beyond Loch Spey and close to the Corrieyairack Pass. It finally enters the Moray Firth and so the North Sea at Spey Bay in Morayshire, having flowed through three distinct areas of countryside. Badenoch or "the drowned land" is the traditional name for that part of the "strath" encompassing the upper reaches of the river from its source down to Loch Insh and Insh Marshes - a flooded flatland and sanctuary of the Royal Society of Protection of Birds. In Badenoch, the River Markie, Calder, Truim, Tromie, Gynack and Feshie all feed into the River Spey.

Srathspey takes in that middle stretch of the river reaching from before Aviemore to beyond Cromdale and Advie upon which some of the very best fishing is to be found. By this time, more than half way down its full length from Aviemore, the Rivers Druie, Dulnain and Nethy have spilled their waters too into the Spey and further down yet, the River Avon with its own source in the Cairngorm Mountains, does so also in Speyside - that area renowned for malt whisky made from water of yet more burns which eventually feed into this great river.

If you prefer trout fishing there are many small lochs which are well stocked to provide a good sport.  Boat fishing opportunities for pike and brown trout are available on Loch Pityoulish and trout only on Lilly Loch. Tackle and accessories can be hired or bought locally and instruction is available for all levels of experience. Why not enjoy an insight into the workings of local fisheries with guided tours and information on all aspects of trout farming. You can watch trout in various pools or purchase food to feed the fish and watch the trout rise in a feeding frenzy, or if you are lucky, see an osprey help itself to the plentiful supply of rainbow trout. If you don't manage to catch anything why not visit the Speyside Smoke House in Grantown-on-Spey where you can watch salmon being smoked and purchase the world famous Scottish smoked salmon or trout.
